It would seem to me that at lower levels, with cost prohibitiveness (made up a word) of salves in mind, that it would make more sense to eq yourself and get a rev rather than eq up a fetch and rot away. Fetches don't seem to hit hard enough or often enough to make up for the damage they're absorbing, whereas using lifesteal and having a rev hit hard behind you in the end would cost less and be just as effective.
Think of it like this: with fetch you're generally naked and occasionally rescue to take some damage and heal up to toss out more rots - but you take a lot more damage without gear.
With a rev, using a combination of lifesteal and rot, the extra damage the rev is putting out minus the damage you're taking thanks to gear, minus the cost of the salves/binding used on the fetch, you end up better off.
This might be common sense, or I might be missing something glaringly obvious. Just some thoughts.
Also, do liches hit hard enough to justify the amount of damage they're absorbing, and is their AC high enough to mitigate that damage enough that they're more efficient than a rev? I would assume yes, but with the way necros seem to change constantly I can't be sure. The amount of necros running around now makes it hard to tell what the preference is (hardly any) but I do see liches more often than revs.
Also, the level and int+wis of the necro seem to have a huge effect on the power of the undead now, whereas before a fetch was a fetch was a fetch and running around as a level 8 with a fetch of philip was close to as good as a 19 with the same fetch. Pretty sure this is common knowledge now, too, just an observation during levelling.
If this doesn't make sense I'll try to explain better later.. very tired.
