I never managed to get my mage past level 12 before getting bored of the play style, and reading the text from all of the FAQ's doesn't always clarify each spell and it's "Permability"
So my question is this, "If you were tanking one day, and had a ton of time and money, how many spells total could you & would you want cast on you? Only Permable ones tho?" *Even the pointless ones, like +climbing and whatnot. *Not counting ones that the mage can only cast on themselves.
1) Armour 2) Enhance Skill
*Also I hear that there are some new Armour spells from the Drow? Are they better or worse than the classic?
Section 2:
I have never played a ficer, and they are very new and slightly confusing to me. But as a Tank, what rings or amulets, wands could they make, or should I be looking for?
1) Wand of Healing? 2) Ring of Skillfulness?

But as a Tank, what rings or amulets, wands could they make, or should I be looking for? Answer: 1) Gauntlets of the dualist 2) Gauntlets of the dualist 3) Gauntlets of the dualist ;D ... also pretty good: Ficer weapons of extra damage made for your skill! Ficer ring of skill plus! Ficer ring of some kind of protection (alternatively: Ficer weapons of skill plus made for your skill; this doesn't stack with the ficer ring of skill plus) mediocre (well, it's still ok ): Ficer made armour of plus something Shield of something - All this stuff consumes some of the limeted 'concentration' of a ficer; so it's not so much a question of money (as ficers tend to be rich anyway) why you won't get one of those. - Remember whom to ask: Smithers can do more easily armours and weapons while Spellies need less concentration for rings, amulets, potions ... - Sometimes you might need ficer stuff for a design document. - When you have a high weapon skill and can't find an appropriate weapon a ficer made weapon without any plusses can already make your day (like v/f mithril rapier forged for skill=100). (I have no spellficer thus I'm not so experienced with their stuff - I think potions of stat-plusses should be great, too, but I don't know how long they last) For sure there is more which just doesn't come to my mind atm.

When I played....
Deeppockets Silk Armour Strength Enchance Skill Protection from Elements Web Shield Anti-Magic Shield
Maybe Spiderlegs... dunno if they can still be permed though.

Additionally... I would use ficer weps if I was working a skill that is not staff. For instance I'd get a hammer of skillfulness and perm es on club. Worked club up into the 50s that way. *shrug*

Worth noting that virtually all the ones lith mentioned are only castable on yourself as a mage, cannot get any of those except ES casted on you by a mage unfornately So to answer your question, AR and to a lesser extent ES, but thats only cuz my main tank hasnt got any skills under 80 *wink* As for ficer gear, shield of mastery (+40ish block) gauntlet of dualists, ring of protection and amulet of protection are the main items on my shopping list, depending on how I'm going to play on the day. skill ring also a nice plus, but not as big a deal for me. The weaponry is also gold, either with or without the enchants, mostly any of the duals work nearly as well or better then anything else in the skill class... like dual LSs, rapiers, flails, polearms, knives. Not tried dual hammers axes spears, but thats because shieldhand ones are so good I've never actually had the pleasure to play with any top end dual spellforged weapons too hard to get a hold of... I imagine dual flails, poleaxes or rapiers of might would be insane

I'm looking to potentially switch over from Ranger to Mage, at what level would you suggest doing so and feeling like I can have most of the spells I want?
I am a half elf

Kind of an embarrassing question coming a player as experienced as you. I haven't played a mage in like 12 years, so I'm not all caught up on all the study hour nuances, but here goes:
1) Figure out the spells you want and how much they cost in study hours, then add up all the study hours 2) Convert study hours into experience points. 3) Multiple (2) by 1.5
(3) is how much exp your ranger should have before you convert to mage.

I think I have played a mage for all of 10 hours perhaps. I'm not too embarrassed to admit I know next to nothing about playing one properly.
Thanks for the tip.
And before I there are any smart remarks about playing a half elf, I fully realise it's not the optimal race for pretty much any class any more, but I'm tired of playing the 'optimal' race.

Notanalt, I'm right there with you. Mage is the only class I never had a L20+ alt of and played effectively. I had a L19 for ages who was just there for perms.

NotACommie: You may wanna look through Rhynst's guide somewhere on here if you haven't already. I too suck total ass with mages, but that seemed to be good info.

Yeah I've read his guide, good stuff.
Being a ranger is superuberlazymode, so I figured I might leech xp from AA as a ranger until I hit full spells (not sure of total xp needed, would need to check) and then switch classes. But then I lose all the weapon skills, as a mage though it doesn't really matter

raise staff, knife, ls, and exotic as the ranger... shouldn't be too horrible a dropoff in the switch to mage.

s'what I get for not reading the entire thread... or the name of the thread for that matter. If you're planning to tank as a mage... my post applies.
