This may already have been done before, but what the hell. I tend to solo most of the time as I need to frequently idle to babysit and do other chores my wife nags me with. Pisses off lot of party people Have multiple chars on AA now, none of them played consistently, as I tend to get 'bored' with a class, start another char and the cycle is endless. So, here is the question, which class would you play in earnestness if you have no choice but to solo most of the time?

First answer by myself. I am beginning to love necros. Little set-up time, enough depth to keep you absorbed, challenge of alignment requirements, powerful rituals etc. Basically you're a party in yourself and with a little knowledge of the MUD, can easily set yourself up to be a force.

Duh. But actually, I had to think about that one for a bit... cuz my answer would be different if I had all the time in the world to play again...... *xxxxxxxxxxxsigh* If I didn't have a mad busy job, and could play at work during the day, and didn't have the fiance, and could go home and play at night like I used to.... I'd probably say a smith Ficer. Cuz I LOVE playin that class, when I have time to gear up the right way. But....... as it is, it's just nice to be able to log in, buy weapon, play.

I'll answer the question you asked, and also respond to your answer to the question you didn't ask.
First your question. if you WANT to party, but can't because you can't find other people, then yes, necro is good way to go, and my personal preference.
However, if you actually want to party some, but real life issues pop up at inconvenient times, then I would go with shapeshifter which requires no set up time, get pretty powerful at the end and benefits you when you have to attend to business offline.
Necros obviously are both good for soloing and partying, but the partying aspect is much more complicated because of the alignment issues, of course assuming you want to maintain the same exp/time ratio as when you solo. IE, if 100k an hour solo, then 200k an hour for a 2 person party. This is because you may be forced to fight evil aligned NPCs to main your rate.

loving my pally atm... they solo nicely rock at the party aspect... i can maintain 100k per hour solo and gear up in a relitively short period of time with decent gear, and also make a decent cash flow
also like my ficer smith... but i havent played him since before the downgrades to constructs... and raising a spelly, which also looks like a fun class

cant beat the spellies. even if you only have a couple of hrs per boot, 1hr -ish to get a (very) basic setup and then away you go.

Shapeshifter is independent enough to do whatever you please, without any outside interaction. While Artificer is very powerful solo, shapeshifter doesn't have RNG nightmares which can ruin an entire boot before it begins. I have unlimited time to play, but I still favor Drakon (because of the consistency, while maintaining versatility). If I were a busy fellow or wizzed into one mortal alt, I'd go with Shapeshifter.

For now, i say ranger..mostly because I haven't raised a smither or a spellie enough to see if i really like wands/constructs
-oh and another thing, im a bit disapointed they havent coded staves yet..atleast change the name of charms&staves...

Spellcraft Ficer for solo, absolutely great stuff there. Setup can be as quick or slow as you want it to be. Also they are flexible as all goodness for whatever may be left alive or your mood inspires for killing.

I don't have a favorite anymore. With a bitter sense of remorse, I play my ranger the most, in memory of my suicidal Necromancer, who hath seen the glory days.

Favourite class has got to be paladin:) Make fast easy - setup free XP solo, tanks great and makes a handy healer/basher addition to a party. Also only bested in skill rate by fighters and rangers so that makes things interesting. The solo kill route can become a bit tedious having all the good areas chopped out, so its nice to mix that up with a few bashers along. Also I suggest that one of the perks of being the tank in the party is you can control the running rate, IE if you needa go afk for 5 or 10 minutes, then no problemmo. Except on the odd occasion when stretch or someone will come along and poach your bashers while your AFK. But typically speaking this is rare

I've really enjoyed playing a ton of the classes but the one I liked the most was fighter. It's the simplest, funnest and most rewarding class by a mile.
