just some thoughts i had for a new area:
- alignment based zmonsters (attack only good players, evil, etc) - dark: npcs that steal your light source - portals - random sensory messages (ie, you notice something out of the corner of your eye, but when you turn your head, nothing is there) - maze (if you keep going north, it gets you nowhere; if you move like n,e,s,w in order, you get to the next room n) - death feeling: everything is pale and drab; quiet - traps (recognize players in a party; attack party members) - npcs that run away - different entrances every boot

You reminded me of an area I dreamed up once for my own MUD. I thought of a cave area that when you were in it with a light source, nothing bothered you. So most players would think the area was boring. But, if you were in there without a light, you were in for a tough fight. The cave would be populated by heat-seeking, light-hating monsters. So long as you had light, they would follow you around the cave system, but a room away. Once your light was gone, they pounced for the kill. Perhaps many low level monters would make it more fun and spammy (like insect plague, yet higher level than that). The cave itself should also be mazelike so that you can't just run out once you've been attacked.

hrm, what about like a gust of wind (yeah, yeah.. mage spell, shutup) that blows out torches? gems, spheres, auras, and light spells would be unaffected. kinda negate torches. ooooooo, it also blows out pipes. lunger would like that...

Wow... another Vin Diesel fan... So you've seen Pitch Black too, eh? Yeah, that was a good movie. The monsters in it used motion detection and it was outdoors, though. I was aiming more for a Predator-like feel, except less intelligent and more of them. =) --Aurac
