Ok, so for the longest time Restful-looking guard has been ye old #1 all-around corpse.
I'm one of those people who quit playing necros after they made the changes. Not because they made the changes so much, but because that also around the time I suicided my alts.
I just now decided to start raising a necro, this time a helf instead of human (I mean Rev used to be the indisputable absolute best, dual-wielding the best possible longswords etc.)
So anywho, I've heard that "Jush" from knight's retreat is the new best corpse, but I'm not sure about that, because last I checked, Restful-looking guard is still a mighty good ass-kicker when he's alive.
Supposing that's true, I thought of an insane newbie question...
What if you made a mummy-Storm Dragon? How would that compare to a lich or rev of Jush?
I mean unholy hot potatoes!
Since by definition, the mummy would be "...nearly as strong as comparable living creatures, and sometimes stronger"
I doubt anyone's tried it. The idea of using a mummy at level 19+ is absurd to most people, but you know it might be awesome!
Being level 8 right now, I have a ways to go before seeing how good that'll be. Also there's the whole "how the **** do I get this corpse in the first place?" thing too.

suicide now and remake as human before you invest too much time. you won't regret it once you get high skills.
the dragon wouldn't be that great because of the level cap of 19 on undead.
but what do i know, i just bash everything and don't help out anyone.

good luck with getting valdy's corpse Yeah, you can comission me for 500k plus expenses. But like Tehlung said undead levels cap at 19 so it'd be shit.

So I got to 21ish with the Helf awhile back, and just kinda got annoyed with being a weakling (I also went skill-focus LS, but with 13 str, Strongarm was definitely in my future). I didn't suicide per se, but I decided to make another human necro. The last human necro before that was EvilErnie, before I eventually suicided "WHAT? Revvy can't wield Diablo+JDR effectively anymore? What is this ***!" Friend says "Yeah it sucks. Just use dual arrows"... a few months later "WHAT? Revvy can't wield Arrow+Arrow effectively anymore? What is this ***!" ..."Then just use Lich, jeeze" "WHAT? Lich can't wear Medicinal Collar, and Ironwood because it's now out yet??" *suicide* That's probably not exactly how it went down. I think I just did a mass suicide with most of my chars around that time, because I was trying to "get a life". Now I have a life and I'm trying to get away from it, so I remade a human necro. He's quite a bit heartier than my Helf was. And holy crap, they really need to be. Is it just me, or do your Undead Pets let NPCs turn on you A LOT more? I find myself with a lich fully decked out, and I'm still taking a lot of damage. I've since become an alertly incessant abuser of 'command protect', and found full armour on me to be a necessity, which is again another nod to Humans since they have enough strength to wear it and carry some loot on top of that. Heck, it's almost inspired me to switch to Dwarf and rely on int-uniques, and patience for getting extra int+wis through traits, but I digress.

I haven't noticed a big difference from when I last played back in 2004 and now. It could be the specific monsters. Some turn more often than others by intelligent design.
