Not sure what happened, but it appears to be a full machine crash. I can't even remote log into the machine AA is hosted on.

Do we have any type of general time frame as to when we'll be up and running again? Holidays = No work hence time to play

Oh noes. I was fighting the dragon in Fub's with a cute set of ironwood. Double pawned, I guess. I'll likely die and/or lose ironwood. Yay.

Actually, to me it seems like a serious network problem: I can't DNS-resolve www.anguish.org (or anguish.org, ancient.anguish.org) at all, and my traceroutes get lost into a sea of asterisks (unknown hops) after Sweden. Can you manage to get a ping through to 208.20.1.214 (AA some time ago) or the usual next-to-last Sprintlink hop, sl-local-1-0.sprintlink.net? (If you can, I have a separate issue and the machine may have crashed. If you can't, Sprintlink's probably somehow broken and AA may be playing by itself as we speak.) --Fir

I get a sea of Asterisks after like 7 hops. But when I check the Internet Weather reports for North America (http://www.internettrafficreport.com/namerica.htm), nothing weird shows up -- 100% of the network is listed as up. Some kind of local Sprintlink problem? I notice they're website says there was some system hardware maintenance today. Although interestingly, their webpages open very slowly. The plot thickens: I can get across the Atlantic (if I take Somatic's word that Kingdomofloathing.com, aka assymmetricpub-69-16-150-196.phx2.puregig.net) is in the States) with this route: 1 nblzone-241-gw.nblnetworks.fi (83.145.241.254) 4.311 ms 5.323 ms 5.474 ms 2 r1-ge1.hki.nbl.fi (217.30.183.140) 6.947 ms 7.422 ms 7.642 ms 3 83.145.236.146 (83.145.236.146) 8.194 ms 8.679 ms 9.551 ms 4 64.209.110.193 (64.209.110.193) 16.962 ms 17.482 ms 18.177 ms 5 64.209.102.174 (64.209.102.174) 168.754 ms 169.207 ms 170.186 ms 6 3-1.core-04.phx.puregig.net (69.16.128.113) 170.905 ms 163.978 ms * 7 * * * 8 asymmetricpub-69-16-150-196.phx2.puregig.net (69.16.150.196) 205.640 ms * * and I can get a "packet filtered" response from www.sprint.net (not sure if Sprintlink's web server has ever responded to ping) with 1 nblzone-241-gw.nblnetworks.fi (83.145.241.254) 53.305 ms 53.566 ms 54.768 ms 2 r1-ge1.hki.nbl.fi (217.30.183.140) 84.591 ms 84.596 ms 85.028 ms 3 hls-b4-link.telia.net (80.239.132.5) 57.108 ms 57.681 ms * 4 * * * 5 kbn-bb2-link.telia.net (213.248.65.166) 76.513 ms 77.019 ms 77.059 ms 6 nyk-bb2-pos5-0-0.telia.net (213.248.64.34) 167.475 ms 142.063 ms 142.474 ms 7 nyk-b1-link.telia.net (80.91.250.165) 137.747 ms 138.225 ms 138.994 ms 8 sprint-119853-nyk-b1.telia.net (213.248.83.154) 139.238 ms 139.648 ms 139.659 ms 9 sl-bb27-pen-12-0.sprintlink.net (144.232.20.97) 142.066 ms 127.774 ms 128.700 ms 10 sl-bb24-pen-15-0.sprintlink.net (144.232.16.81) 130.925 ms 137.260 ms 136.797 ms 11 sl-bb20-rly-15-0-0.sprintlink.net (144.232.20.145) 135.503 ms 133.491 ms 134.063 ms 12 sl-dr10-res-9-0.sprintlink.net (144.232.19.122) 134.750 ms 135.197 ms 135.677 ms 13 160.81.117.110 (160.81.117.110) 144.369 ms 137.478 ms 137.411 ms 14 * * * (a sea of asterisks until hop 30). Re: Moby, sweet site, I'll be bookmarking that. Sprintlink needs a local Internet weather report system too, their web of distrust is an utter pain to debug. --Fir

I dug up a log of a healthy traceroute from me to AA:
traceroute to ancient.anguish.org (208.20.1.214), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets 1 nblzone-241-gw.nblnetworks.fi (83.145.241.254) 3.804 ms 3.523 ms 3.735 ms 2 r1-ge1.hki.nbl.fi (217.30.183.140) 3.849 ms 13.346 ms 3.884 ms 3 r4-ge1.hki.nbl.fi (80.81.160.233) 4.559 ms 4.101 ms 7.048 ms 4 ge-2-0-1.se-sthms001-pe-1.tu.telenor.net (212.105.101.38) 12.064 ms 11.627 ms 41.022 ms 5 213.242.110.1 (213.242.110.1) 11.799 ms 11.709 ms 12.063 ms 6 ge-0-0-0.mp1.Stockholm1.Level3.net (4.68.96.221) 11.615 ms ge-2-0-0.mp1.Sto ckholm1.Level3.net (4.68.125.217) 18.465 ms 46.471 ms 7 as-2-0.bbr2.London1.Level3.net (4.68.128.213) 61.341 ms 61.560 ms 61.542 ms 8 ae-0-56.gar2.London1.Level3.net (4.68.116.172) 61.140 ms ae-0-54.gar2.London1.Level3.net (4.68.116.108) 61.715 ms ae-0-56.gar2.London1.Level3.net (4.68.116.172) 61.750 ms 9 sl-bb21-lon-6-0.sprintlink.net (213.206.131.21) 50.633 ms 50.191 ms 49.995 ms 10 sl-bb22-lon-3-0.sprintlink.net (213.206.129.153) 50.247 ms 50.230 ms 50.433 ms 11 sl-bb20-nyc-2-0.sprintlink.net (144.232.9.163) 195.672 ms 242.152 ms 119.976 ms 12 sl-bb22-nyc-8-0.sprintlink.net (144.232.7.106) 113.791 ms 113.810 ms 114.258 ms 13 sl-bb21-chi-3-0-0.sprintlink.net (144.232.20.102) 136.452 ms 135.958 ms 136.245 ms 14 sl-gw31-chi-10-0.sprintlink.net (144.232.26.30) 135.736 ms 136.121 ms 136.249 ms 15 sl-local-1-0.sprintlink.net (144.223.21.222) 157.928 ms 155.738 ms 155.607 ms 16 anguish.org (208.20.1.214) 156.420 ms 154.941 ms 155.209 ms
I can get up to sl-gw31-chi-10-0.sprintlink.net normally, while sl-local-1-0.sprintlink.net gets lost into asterisks after the nyk-b1-link.telia.net hop. Apparently it's a local problem with Sprintlink, again. Grrrr. (It's the sl-local-1-0.sprintlink.net hop which goes nuts whenever my packets get eaten by the infinite loop of doom too. I wonder what kind of an abstraction hop it is, really.)

Oh yeah, sorry, in English this means a futile *ggggrowl Sprintlink/service provider behind the last local-hop*. I mailed a couple of senate folk whose email addresses I've got handy to let them know.
If you've got a customer relationship with Sprintlink or can figure out a nice means to let them know that their network problem is ruining our holiday (I won't call them long-distance from Finland, especially without knowing for certain that they'll listen to random callers), let them know. The traceroute data should have some meaning to them.

I somehow suspected the MUD was down when I woke up to see fifteen people currently watching Proboards. ;D
