Hello all! My little brother is playing a mage... I have only had my own mage to level 13 so I can't help him out too much. He is at level 9 now, and will soon be choosing his school. I suggested Conjuration.. for the obvious Acid Arrow, and Armour, since I am a cleric and I tank for him often this I thought would be a nice benefit... Soon to my newfound glory, I read the sticky post about mages.. the whole 50 page thing... I discovered that maybe alteration may be better?... I have never used or seen an alteration mage fight before... so I could not help him decide. He will almost always be bashing, since he doesn't know the mud well... and because he is very young. As a cleric, tanking for one mage, and no others in the party which school would be best? Also, the other way around. As a cleric, tanking for one mage, and one fighter, which school is best? 95% of the time, he will be bashing... So I figured maybe haste/deeppockets might be better? I'm not sure since I am not skilled in the arts of the Magi. Any thoughts on this, and why you think that way? I would like to learn from you all, so please don't just say... um yeah, alteration

alteration would be the best one if he's going to be bashing most of the time. When you have a fighter bashing with you in the party keep him/her hasted on the big kills and stuff drops fast. deeppockets are nice and handy for snagging all the loot and all tanks like to receive armour spell if it's going. fireball is nice too when you are killing the frost giants up north. apart from that there's not much else to say without repeating stuff that's in the guide.

Yeah, after thinking it over it was quite obvious. It just took a bit longer to realize alteration was better, since i don't know many of the mage spells and what they do.. only the famous ones Acid arrow, deeppockets etc etc. So my judgement was clouded.
By the way, how long does the hast spell last, does spellpower affect it, and about how much sps does it cost?
If it's sps cost was relatively low... than I can see how it overpowers an acid arrow 4-1

Haste costs 90 at spellpower high, 70 at spellpower low, for an elf conjuration mage anyways. And yeah, spellpower does effect how long it lasts. I'd recommend always using high. *shrug* And you should also get enhance magic, since it costs 70 sps instead of 90, and makes the haste last just about as long as it does the first time... and you can stack the ems... so if you're killing in an area with a bunch of back-to-back big baddies, you can cast haste, cast em, drink a pot or whatever, cast em again... and the fighter will be hasted the entire time.
Oh, and acid arrow, for a human conj mage, is 51 sps, versus 90 for haste/70 em. So, if you have a fighter bashing to haste...... haste is - - way - - better than AA. Expensive, but does tons more damage. (lotus for hs, lotus/parsnip for em...)
