Alright so I'm a new player, just learning the mud and it sounds like being a tank will be uber fun. So...
Where do I start. Obviously I know very little in terms of areas, which equates to also knowing very little as to where to get certain equipment and weapons. Whatever I find in the shops is what I get.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to best learn how to tank?
Would it be best to explore a ton and learn areas? Would it be best to simply tag along with someone else and learn places? I am level 12 currently and it takes me forever to get experience. Should I slog my way through the plethora of orcs (I'm a Knight) until I am level 19 and then try and figure all of this out?

Weekdays i might be on after 8pm GMT or anytime at the weekends. Although, I'm not on that much lately but I'm sure Ivanhood would give ya a few tips....

Alright thanks. MY wife needs to leave town all weekend for a funeral and so that means I get to basically do what I want. So I'll have all weekend to try and figure this out.

;D I think that as you are totally new to the mud .bashing for a few different tanks might help you get an idea of what tanking is all about ,and you will learn what you like and dislike ..most tanks seem to have certain likes and dislikes( some are self obsessed too !!*grin*) then get your map to hand and go exploring!!cant explore all places on your own but you can find out how to get there and what to expect Also ,if you get a couple of lvl 12 fighters ,and learn a few areas ,you can begin tanking and gaining confidence If you just keep asking questions you will learn quickly

I'm actually also on my first char for tanking, I've had probably a total of 6 chars(3 or 4 19s) previous to this as bashers. So, what my suggestion to you, was that you should maybe do a bashing char first, or as Lahana said, bash for some tanks. I assume you are a cleric, so you should be able to do both, try to memorize the large mobs (get on websites like Ionstar's, Peblo's, etc..) and check out the big mobs etc...
You won't be able to handle those mobs at level 12 of course, but you could try smaller mobs, possibly 3ks, if you have trouble, just grab some heals and check out different areas, places with midlevel mobs like dalair, or nepeth, and see what you can handle. Don't be afraid to waste some cash when your startin out

I hit 14 today, and I guess with Turtle and Aura, well, maybe I'd give it a shot. Anyway, I was wondering what kind of gear would be easily accessible at the beginning of a run, as well as what general guidelines for kills are (Don't aim however far above your level, etc.)
Also, I was wondering what some favorite heals were (Knight's hall a little off limits for me, I'm an orc)

I never go near Mishas anymore mostly because of them annoying guards. It's good that the guards are there in some respects because it makes you go and check out all the other heals in the game. Here's some that you might find alright:
Food (take-away only) Tant: 5n, 2e, 2 from X. Trenchers/wastelbreads. Neville: 13n, 3e, 3n, 2w, n. Sausages. Thanarack: 30n, 9w, 4n, 4w, 4n, w. Feast/Merchant Meals. Wayferer's Rest: Rations Drakhiya: Lamb
Check out the general forum and u'll find a sticky which lists TONS of heals in the game and tells you what they give you in HP/SPS and how much they can be aquired for.

I must've read something wrong... *wipes off his glasses* Did you just actually say "It's good that the Nepeth guards are there"?? ?? ?? *blink*
Yeah, it's good. Good like losing your job makes you appreciate the cost of food. Good like your car getting stolen makes you realize how well our public transportation system works. Good like falling out of a tree and breaking your neck lets you appreciate how nice it was to be able to walk. Yep. Good changes.
I've always used other heals when I'm in the area, and some of em are pretty good. But none of them touches kniggets. So making them a pita to get is good how again? *grin*

Them guards are hot ;D
We won't go into the whole guards thing again though...
Apart from being able to be put in sacks, and being edible off the ground, they aren't as tasty as a good auld sausage. ok...i give up. (edit: i meant kniggets. Shouldn't drink guinness on a work nite...)
