I've had problems in the past raising mages, stemming from the fact that rarely do I have more then about 1.5k study hours by the time I hit level 10, leaving me without a real offensive spell... Most of the time I just stand and hit with my staff, but it's not a real help. (I gain maybe 50 more study hours).
Any ideas on how to get those points faster? Or just stick with magic missile? (It doesn't seem to take down targets too well)

Quite a few people like to raise elf fighters up to 100 staff /1.2 million exp range and then do a switch. That way you have some decent staff and good spells. However, if you insist on doing it the "old fashioned" way, I would suggest that after you hit level 10, pay for a permed e.s. on your staff and start asking parties to tag. That will net you exp (study hours) and more skills. Once you get your first off. spell (aa probably) then things become a lot easier.

when i raise mages i usually start off in invocation with fireball, and switch into whatever i want to be at level 19 (with a stack of study hours saved up)
and don't give me any of that 'fireball sucks' nonsense

steading is a constant killing zone with fireball. But it's not like it's unable to kill real stuff either, it still does well over half the damage of acid arrow while costing slightly less

Uh, pe/sc/sh have been in for years.... they've been in for at least as long as I've been playing, and I always assumed they'd been in since mage was implemented.

fire ball is great if you wanna blow through the early levels once you get a school. In school fireball is something like 1.6k, costing 0 components, and a bit less than AA (in school) and vs frost creatures.... pft, it's like taking candy from a baby. Kill all the heal droppers in delair, grab a few drinks (firebreathers suggestedly) and run around the frost giant area (steading?) fireballing giants left and right. I don't suggest sticking in any rooms for more than a round, so hit and running (assuming you've cleared the wanderers) is an ingenious idea. Lightning works even more wonderfullness on these. I've heard a blinding white can send a frost giant into SW/AD (though I doubt that, even though LN is fire based, that's a bit high of damage) though, I wouldn't doubt that a BW ln and a fireball or 2 would cook 'em.
AFTER you get AA (assuming you decide on conjuration) I suggest hit and running the knights to build up a few 100k in cash (and a bit of exp) and then move onto some of the "nastier" kills in the game. Sati is a prime choice from 10-15ish, because she is a relativly easy 4ker, who seems to miss me quite often, when I have blur/defend dodge on. Plus no expers usually go for her, and you can load her down with empty bottles to ruin her dex more too (that may just be a myth though). I strongly suggest trying to procure glimmer from 1-10 if you can. That's a LOT of extra studyhours (100kish exp to get from 1-10, right?) which means possibly 500ish more (I suck at math, and it's late) so that means youre a LOT closer to AA. AA can be obtained (in school) at about 11/12 (11 w/ glimmer 12 w/o) and if you're not in conj, AA is not a good primary offensive choice because it's 7k OOS (level 13ish) I would also suggest ONLY bare minimums from 1-10. light, flame dart, blur(that isn't required but it's nice), and identify. I think that's only like 100ish, then rope trick (so you can buy components) and then you can get the "main" offensive spells.
I've heard a LOT of people say Go invokation for an easy fire ball. Rape frost based mobs, and stockpile about 10k study hours, switch to your "main" school, and have a good head start on study hours. This is probably the fastest way, though, it may be the least fun.
