Jalen is the name of an NPC located in the Diamond Monolith. Has anyone ever faced him? I was trying to clear this area earlier today, and came up to him. As you may know I play a ranger so I was able to "glance" at him. I'm lvl 17 now, and he came up "worthy" so I thought with a white wolf we should have little trouble with him. The first thing he does is unleash a hoard of insects which gathered around my wolf. Somehow I get attacked in this fray (i had the wolf attack first) and flee in panic before i truly knew what was going on (the insects spammed up the fight real well). So wolfie and i are 2d trying to kill all the bugs around it, which wasnt hard, they didnt even move it down from "slightly hurt" so I go outside to elude then go back up and, of course, he auto-attacks me, and casts some necro spell that does 40 damage!! So, i flee in a panic again being at 21 hps. Can you believe this? Has anyone incountered this NPC before? Is it worth the trouble to defeat him? I might not try again, he might kill me...

i'm sorry, but i had to laugh about your post. it's not often that we encounter true newbies on aa. the diamond monolith is a high level area. most to all of the kills in it are very difficult. at the entrance, you are greeted by an acolyte. titty kill. then s and 2u we see a guardian. responds to 'dwarf' and isn't too hard to take down. take the crock from his corpse and go w. 'dip crock' fills it with cider. you can repeat this until the vat is empty. go back east and after using his sword (insert pommel in slot), 2u you will find jalen. now, there are a few ways to get around some of jalen's spells. most of them involve using a class' special skills. all classes on the game do share one ability though.. one that will help you against jalen after jalen, continuing up the tower you will come across zhephani, a beautiful elfin maid. now she's a beeotch. she also follows, so if for some reason you run from her during a fight, run all d and 3n. if you manage to kill zhephani, 'grab dust' then 'sprinkle dust on portal'. 'enter portal' will take you to the next room, where you will see a mound. 'touch mound' will bring up the giant, rold. another kill that is very nice, but not as hard as zhephani. there are two other ways to bypass zhephani and get to rold, but i will let you figure those out as well. hehe. all of the kills in the diamond monolith stack, meaning that the longer since they are killed, the more exp they are worth. for example, if zheph and rold aren't killed all boot, they can potentially be worth almost 20k each. very nice exp for a party rumbling through or even a pally with too many heals on his hands. the monolith is a nice little area with decent kills. have fun and enjoy ;D

Well, flinging bolas isn't exactly an ability shared by all classes, unless you don't consider Paladins a class. Perhaps he meant the ability to run like a little sally?
