The Senate periodically reviews and discusses our many rules and policies, including the process for promotion from Apprentice (400) to Full Wizard 500).
Brief History
-------------
In 2007, for those more interested in Mudlib, the Senate and Education team committed to working on a non-area track as an alternative. [1]
In 2010, the Education domain was abolished and the responsibility of assisting and evaluating new wizards was shared among the wizard community as a whole, as the number of incoming new wizards no longer required a separate team. At that time, the specific requirement of a 9 room / 3 npc + objects project was also changed to a somewhat smaller requirement (6 room / 2 npc + objects) with some non-area options as well (with the additional requirement of Senate preapproval or full review through the approval queue). Instead of formal review by the Education team, Apprentice tasks in the post-education era have been reviewed by an active current or retired Senator (850+), who acted as a 'Presponsor'. [2]
Purpose
-------
The traditional and primary function of this path is to make sure new wizards are ready for what lies beyond. It is essential to have an understanding of our programming language, our approval system and our rules for wizards before they are granted full wizardhood.
Some might be able to demonstrate this understanding soon after ascension to Apprentice level, while others may require additional time and guidance.
Now, in an effort to continue to streamline this process and tailor it to the needs and talents of individual apprentices, the requirements for promotion from Apprentice to Full Wizard have been further simplified.
New Process
-----------
As of today, the process henceforth involves:
- Speak with an active 750+ [3] (who will act as your Presponsor) about your ideas and goals as a wizard.
- Find an active creator or higher (600+) to act as your Sponsor.
- Code some part of a proposed idea, to demonstrate understanding of LPC.
- When your Presponsor and Sponsor agree you are adequately prepared for the path ahead, you will be promoted to Full Wizard (500).
The primary changes between the previous path and the new process are that the pool of potential Presponsors has expanded to include level 750 and 800 wizards, and the coding requirement is much more flexible (no specific room requirement or full approval queue review).
