mostly what im interested in is what is the best race for this class, and what skills artificers excell with. Any help with these questions would be appreciated.
On the subject of race, i was told by one person that human would be the best for this class, but generally people say that becase humans are a nice middle ground, however the concentration aspect says that it is maintained my intel and wis, so would that mean that H-elfs are the most ideal?

Well, Necromancers rely on Int + Wis as well... I'm thinking that, once a few key creations are isolated as the "better" constructs/items, then having just enough concentration for those would be key for the "best" race - although, that does limit an individual from fully trying out all aspects of the class... and from what I understand, the class is huge. With so many libraries around Anguish, it's impossible to tell at this stage.

Full agreement with that last post as far as "best" race goes... Insofar as stats are concerned it looks like Arty's are: Plus 2 Dex; Plus 2 Int; Neg 2 Con; Neg 1 Str; and Wisdom is the same as adventurer.

Judging by the tone, I'd say he did.

Thanks! Also, a quick and easy FAQ for the questions I've encountered so far, might be more handy than reading a huge guide:
Q)What skills are artificers good with? A)'Ficers can use clubs and knives reasonably well.
Q)What are the max stats? A)Elf: 12 19 19 11 14 Half-Elf: 13 17 18 11 16 Orc: 15 18 15 14 13 Dwarf: 16 16 14 14 15 Human: 15 17 17 13 14
Q)What's the best race? A) Up to you to decide, but if you're going to choose elf or helf, do it for a reason other than their concentration, as I'll explain NEXT QUESTION! Also, consider the strength you need to wield some of the larger clubs.
Q)How does concentration work? A)It's your highest stat out of int or wis: If you have int 5 and wis 15, your concentration is 15. If you have int 12 and wis 3, your concentration is 12. If you have base int 12 and wis 3 and a spidermedallion (+2 int), your concentration is 14.
For every level past 19, you get 2 extra concentration.
When you make items, you use concentration. How much depends on the item and your specialty. When the item is destroyed, you get that concentration back. Simple!
Q)What's a speciality/what's the best specialty/how do I specialise? The specialties are spellsmith and smithcrafter: Spellsmiths make wands, scrolls and potions cheaply, and can recharge wands. Smithcrafters make weapons and constructs cheaply, and can repair constructs.
Best is up to you to decide. Stick to neutral for a while and see which playing style you prefer. To specialise, go to the class hall and type 'specialise smithcraft/spellcraft'.
Q)I just saw a wand auctioned. What do they do? A)Wands have a limited number of charges of a spell. To use the spell, wield the wand and 'wave wand [at someguy]'. IDing the wand tells you how many charges it has left. Spellcrafters can 'recharge' wands to restore the charges to them.
Q)How do I use scrolls? A)'pen scroll of whatever' to make it, and to cast it just read it. Damage scrolls are read in combat. Scrolls can have many charges before they finally disintegrate. Only artificers can read scrolls.
Q)How do I make rings and amulets? A)'craft metalname ring/amulet'

I've noticed that a lot of people are going dwarf. Has anyone tried an orc with any luck? They get +2 dex over the dwarf and their int is the same as the dwarf's wis.

Without having ever tested the artificers when I could play and saw them on the testmud so I'm just going buy what little I've read, but I think it would suck to lose most of your research and having the formulas change each boot. Its a damn good thing it was decided to lengthen them. The cynic in me thinks that the vote that they put forth was just a farce. They wanted you guys to think you were effecting change, but they were going to lengthen the boot anyways for ficers. But anyways, has anyone decided to not play a ficer anymore because of all the work you'd have to put in each boot to get back your knowledge and then gather all your materials, or is it really not that bad?

Well, they've barely been in for even two boots yet, and damn near everyone has an artificer alt (I'll probably make one this weekend). I think it's gonna be like everything else new in the game. Give it a few weeks for the "omg new shit!" stuff to wear off, and we'll see then if they're still popular.

But anyways, has anyone decided to not play a ficer anymore at all[/i] because of all the work you'd have to put in each boot to get back your knowledge and then gather all your materials, or is it really not that bad?[/quote] fixed. yes, same reason i don't play my necro anymore. i wanna log in and kill shit, not fiddle around getting a corpse/eq/recipies/etc. log teh ranger, instant overpowered tank, can slay for everything i need without barely healing it or myself. and on top of that i skill insanely fast. enough said.
