Uh, I've never ever had a mage as a primary character. Only mages I've ever had were always bhunters (log in, buy white iron, 4 mungas, 3 murkies, 6 reds) or a permage (log in, go to monks, meditate, cast, meditate, meditate perm, meditate, meditate, meditate, quit). I've got a L19 mage now with 14 staff and NOT the es spell nor haste thanks to multiple class changes. So, I'm wanting to get ahold of Glimmer and slam out a few thousand study hours for some of the heartier skilling spells. But, like I said I've never had a mage as a main alt, so I've never bothered with getting Glimmer. So, how do I do it? =P

Glimmer, eh? Like they said, with a mageling, better either a. Bring a full dp of heals and plan on never leaving the room till he's dead. or b. Bring a rowboat to enter, or cast tiny hut the second you get in the room for hit n run. Cuz he does follow, and sometimes he's a wuss kill, but sometimes he rapes you... twice. I've prolly died to him 3-4 times with mage alts, and once with a necro. *peer* (Not that many npcs can claim 4 or 5 kills on me, if that tells ya anything. Of course, that was when I was young and dumb... he's not a problem as long as you do a or b (see above)) Anyways... I don't know the exact dirs, but I always go 9w 4s all west till you hit the bridge on the way to eldar. Then go back east one, and start working north. It's like 2-3 n, w, 2-3 n, and you'll hit a bridge with a student mage. I think if you're a mage he doesn't auto, not sure if you can just waltz past. I always kill them anyways, decent exp, and free spell componants. Anyways, go north past him, then west into Alton's cave (or whatever the hell it is.) All south is another mage, kill him, search, find a locked door leading sw. North and sw of there is a room with trash or something in there, search that for a key to the locked door. Open, go thru, another mage. Kill him, search the room, go to the next room, search, etc till you find a gray door leading sw again. Smash it, go sw, kill the other little mageling. (I think I like this part just cuz I get to kill so many little magelings. *cackle*) You'll find a bunch of different rooms, study, bedrooms, etc. There's one room with a mage, and a desk. Search the desk, get the key, then go to the bedroom with the closet. There's another mage there methinks (shocker, right?) Waste him. Search, unlock the door, go sw (Original with the directions in this area the coder was, yes? *best read with a bad Yoda impersonation*) There's a bigger mageling in this room. Yep. Ghost him. Now you search, and find a hidden black door or something leading north. Ok. This is Alton's room. Now, if no "girl thingys" came there and called him out, then ran like the skirts that they are... there's gonna be an empty room north. This would be where the rowboat / tiny hut comes into play. Either way, if he's there already or not, your next step will be to run in and drop boat or cast th. Or, if you went with plan a., just run in and start pounding on him. If he's not there, he'll appear in like 5 seconds. If you do die to him, he'll loot your corpse, and use any heals/eq you had on you. Always neat to die, then go back and fight him while he's got all your heals. *mumble been there, done that, got the scars* But basically, he's not that hard as long as you know wtf you're doing. Not the best set of directions in the world, but you'll figure it out. Oh, and btw, it's a good idea to keep every key you pick up in this area... cuz I think the doors aren't knockable, and if you leave the key outside, or eat it, you'll be screwed and waiting for a friend to let you back out. (And if the doors reset while you're fighting, and have to panic-run for some reason....... no key = deadness. ) Oh, and if any of you poor bastards out there that actually play magelings on purpose feel the need to rip my directions apart, or post more better versions, feel free. My feelings won't be hurt.

I got scared when i once asked thothamon if he knew if glimmer was out.. he said "wait" and just a few min later, "he didn't have so i killed will check when he reset"
and i know it hurts to go into that area so atleast i was impressed.. solo mage kill all those small magelings and alton so fast..

as a mage, you can run by the first three magelings.. other classes have to kill to get by. so, as a mage, you only have 2 students then alton. get th and aa, 4 packs of parky, a pipe, and 4 meds. easily enough to waste him. if for some reason he doesn't have glimmer, mk the area south of his room then next time you only have to kill him. it's not all that difficult.

Some other tips that may come in handy...
If you cast web wall in a room with an Alton understudy, he will auto the web wall and you can attack the mage without taking damage. It will eventually die if you don't dish out enough damage, but web walls have lots of hps, so you can easily kill the mages without it dying first. Neat.
Also, sometimes it takes a few kills to get Glimmer to appear (as you know); it's very easy to kill him repeatedly by perming a dd to him from a nice secretive location. That way, you can kill him using your prefered method (hit and run aa's, CK, etc.) using your door, and you can check to see when he resets by peering into the door and seeing that the hidden door south has disappeared again.
I'm not one to use tiny huts -- if you can perm a dd you have more flexibility and still have the safety of escaping his range of movement.

good call on the permed dd. that way, you could still fuck around and use your mk on other shit.
i'd be hesitant to use the ww trick though. sounds like bug abuse to me...

I know people have reported it before, but I think it was shrugged off as a feature. The alton mages hate anything non-mage, so when they see a web wall they slash at it until it's gone.
As far as I know, they're the only ones that hate web walls (silly unedumucated mages.)

The actual directions to Alton's caverns are 11s, 13w, 9n, w, nw, s, search trash, n, se, s, search, unlock sw, open sw, sw, s, search, open w, w, nw, sw, search desk, ne, se, s, w, s, kill or fear mage, unlock sw, open sw, sw, w, kill or fear mage, search, open n, n and be ready to fight. Alton's got some killer hits, and he follows, so either be ready to quit out in a hurry or have a tiny hut or dimension door ready. Just don't be in the same room as him with less than 70 hps, or it could turn out to be a very bad day.

Machine,
You could always just log on a newbie Chaos alt and ask the Glimmer whores if you can borrow it.
*twiddle*
Oh, and I thought you were supposed to be gone!
