I know that only elf alt mages can get all the spells, but I was wonderin how well everyone else does - human conj or orc drowgar for eg. Do int uniques let you learn spells you can't normally learn?
Do any of the combos miss out on the good spells (apart from perm)?

Perm is the problem spell but it is not an exclusive elf spell.
All alteration mages (even orcs) can get it with a few int uniques.
All other mages can get everything else if i remember right, though not sure of drowgar.
So basically alteration can learn all, anyone else can learn all, minus perm

I'm far from an expert, but even if you get your sps up to the level of perm, I heard that it's still based on your natural int. So even boosting wouldn't let you learn the spell. Just something I remember hearing years ago. I'm wrong if you know the opposite, Froggy.

I have a human mage who needed a unique to learn, and needs one to cast perm.

I'm not sure but i don't think it is base int based(havn't done any testing...) i always go for a elf perm mage with the boosters rather then a elf with none *shrug* dunno

You speak the truth. Half-elves can learn the permancency spell without int uniques in school as well.

do you actually need the required sps to learn the spell? i thought it was just to cast it. for instance.. i am making an orc mage atm. i thought that i could learn any spell i wanted, just not be able to cast it. am i wrong? (not that i would admit it...)

It's actually rather interesting. To learn the spell, you have to be able to cast it at spellpower high. Therefore, you'll have trouble learning spells like CK and Strength out of school, if you're not maxed and a non-magic class (such as PowerOrcs and MasterDwarves)
