The necro thread had me starting to think about the best race class combos in the game today. AA has changed quite a bit in recent years
For me, the best race/class combos would be, explanations below:
Necro - human
Paladin - orc
Fighter - orc
Ranger - human
Rogue - orc
Mage - human
Cleric – orc (as long as they get wrath)
I have no idea about artificer/shitter, since I've never played them.
This is considering the new levels/skills/traits and my current playing style.
Necro – back in the day, h-elf was the best race for this class as rot did heaps more damage dependent upon int+wis combo. There were also very few npcs who could deal out heaps of damage in one round, so the low hp total of 138 wasn't much worry. Lack of strength sucked a bit, but rot (before skills/undead upgrade) did all your damage anyway. Human is now easily the best choice due to higher str and con with a low value placed on int+wis combo above achieving lich.
Paladin – similar to necro, except with smite. With the downgrade of smite, upgrade to turtle, and addition of decent shields, there's no point of h-elf. Dex for blocking/hitting, str for damage, and con for surviving are much better than a few extra hps from smite. Who bothers staying saintly anymore?
Fighter – self explanatory. Humans do raise skills a bit quicker, but miss out on that +1dex.
Ranger – I don't really play this class, but as long as humans get an enormous wolf, I would say that's worth the -1 dex/con loss over orc. Dwarf used to be the best before the new wolves due to taming wis limits.
Rogue – self explanatory. Theft isn't really viable with the new levels to go elf.
Mage – See Paladin, substitute AA for smite. Haste + weapon is the primary damage dealer now. There is no need for the elf int boost because of new levels/sps max. Orc might be viable, but I don't play this class.
Cleric – I don't really play this class, but as long as orc gets wrath, the -2dex penalty dwarves get is not worth the +2wis or +1str bonus imo.
I guess the bottom line is to be able to achieve the basics of the class, then look for highest dex, con, and str in that order.
