To bring life back into another (very old) thread, I wanted to start this thread off with the one simple question many of us would like to know, "Whats the best party combo"
Lets be realistic and not count 4-person parties, since just about any four level 19 characters can kill just about anything and make decent exp. Therefore lets do parties of 2 or 3 members.
I once read a long time ago, the most ideal party was:
Tank: Dwarf Cleric (Desty/Shield) Basher1: Dwarf Fighter (Tree Trunk) Basher2: Dwarf Fighter (Tree Trunk)
(Which brings me to another question, since tree trunk used to be one of, or the most damaging weapon in the game, what are the top three now?)

Going by the number of people that do be on now I'd say stick with your regular cleric/fighter combos and u'll make lotsa exp and cash and usually find bashers easily but tanks are rarer.

As a non hardcore tank, I found that my best two person combo has been dwarf cleric with fighter (human I think) dualling forbs. Orc fighter would probably be a step up, and I'm not too sure about dwarf fighters dualling. Main reason for this is that I don't feel like I am such a void for heals and I can do some decent damage with an ok weapon like desty, hjem, or mstar.
With 3 person (my preferred), I am just partial to rogue (human or orc), with orc/dwarf/human fighter (dual orbs optimal or some good damage single weapon), and then either another fighter or a ranger or a mage with haste. Doesn't hurt to have the mage as an elf with more sps for hasting and perms. While tripping could help with the two person, this party both benefits more from a successful trip and is not hurt by an untrippable opponent.

Wow. Tough question. 2man... Rogue tank's out, because you'll burn heals too damn quick. Either dwarf cleric, or dwarf pally would be my top choice. If you're looking for a nice mix of gold and exp... cleric. If you're looking for decent gold, and killer exp... pally. And an orc fighter for the basher (dwarf works too) Orc dualing forbs, dwarf using kraky, crescent, ssword... The pally's turtle lets him tank just as efficiently as a rogue or cleric, and the smite/harms he gets with the extra sps allows him to fly through the tough evil/undead kills. Oh, and high ls with osword in right hand..... *drool* I'm still amazed every time I tank with palpatine how many bonecrushes and massacres I get...... 3man... *ponder* Well... this is a tossup for me... Definitely pally for the tank, especially if you can get your hands on ichor. You use heals at the same rate as you would with starry or aog, but you get so much extra sps for smites and harms, which make things die a lot quicker. For the bashers, one orc/dwarf fighter like before... and then either another fighter... or a high level ranger with crescent and bolas. The wolfie deals out extra damage, which combined with the rangers huge weapon and strikes, makes him deal out about the same damage as a fighter... (close enough anyways) and the bola keeps everything that's trippable on their backs. This makes up for whatever you're lacking damagewise for the ranger, and lets the other fighter and pally get in much harder hits on the npcs. HUGE help... Speaking from personal experience, I'd say the bola ranger is better than the haste mage, by far. For one thing, the haste mage can't really keep one basher hasted the whole time without burning heals, much less the basher and the tank. And every single haste costs spell componants, and those 400 gold a pop lotus petals add up after a while. Sinew is, what, a few k coins for a hundred? or go kill fuzzies for meat to feed the wolf and get your own sinew pile built up. And -everyone- in the party gets to hit the npcs harder while it's tripped... ;D

from personal experience, and i'm biased towards rogues, cuz i luvem and i dont have as much experience tanking with other classes as rogues, rogues+fighter beats all. you just have to change your kills to more tripables vs less magic casters i guess, and hope that the random trip generator is your buddy this time not saying it's the best, but it's doable used to be able to do steady 200k hour each just me+1fighter, usualy cherysa's.

well those numbers were if i was using ls and the fighter dualing picks or a crescent usualy i think. forbs would be better if there's an exotic and two wep skill to back it up. and the patience to get them

I've been in some monster exp parties with my human fighter. From personal experience:
Lunger (helf necro), lich of Iannis and me Beergoggles (elf/helf necro), lich of restful guard and me Funkyflea (not elf/helf necro), rev of Iannis and me Lanstro (orc rogue), Ohbash (orc fighter) and me Faile (cute female teenager) and me Palpatine (tempermental doorf pally), Rhynst (human ranger), wombat boy and me Sanitarium (human or doorf pally) and me Lest (doorf cleric), Edgecrusher (orc fighter) and me Forbidden (orc rogue) and me
For a two man party, necro/fighter is good for the basher but not necessarily so exp-wise for the tank. So rogue/fighter and pally/fighter would be my top two combos.
For a three person party, the most common would be cleric or rogue and two fighters. But the combo with the most potential would be pally/ranger/fighter. Calvin already explained the benefits of that combo. However, it takes an exceptionally good ranger to keep an eye on everything that's goes on (throwing/repairing bola, knowing when to throw bolas, when to command wolf to attack, doing eq/heals, watching your own sps, striking, feeding wolf, etc). In other words, only Rhynst can make that party combo possible.
I've never been in a party with a mage pumping out acid arrows. Any opinions?

3 man: pally, ranger, fighter
pally: carries his own heals fighter: on eq ranger: only does ranger shit, carries extra set of pots
so not that complicated really for the ranger basher...

Yeah... the ranger part is complicated... but no more so than the tanking part. And when me and Lanstro used to pull those huge numbers, 600-700k/hr every time we partied..... guess who the third person was? An orc ranger. Chun. It just took practice to get used to doing what he had to do. Once we had a few intense parties under our belts, everything just... flowed. We'd do 630k/hr, take a 5 minute cig break, and do 620 the next hour. That's counting stops for purges... and the sad thing was, we were getting that speed, and after a while, it just felt normal, like it wasn't really any different than a 400k/hr party. *grin*

i think the equipment the party has makes a huge difference to the viability of some classes in parties, so i'll list what i think would in theory pull the most experience in those categories:
Crappy eq (radiant, black shield sort of quality):
2 person: rogue+fighter, cleric+ranger 3 person: rogue+fighter+ranger or cleric or paladin
Optimal eq (whatever you like):
2 person: paladin+ranger (a helluva lot of untrippables are undeads, hello mr paladin, and if it's trippable...game over already) 3 person: paladin(maybe mage?)+ranger+fighter
But reality is way different from theory, my best 2-person was cleric-ranger and my best 3 was rogue-fighter-fighter
