My favorite place to kill for the midlevels was in the eastern part of the northern tundra (31N, 9W, 10N, 17E, 7N, all E, 1W, 2 NW). It's nice because there aren't too many aggros (snow wolves, wolverines and large elks) but I'd run to the bridge or Dubo's to heal up just in case. I'd attack, command my wolf to attack, run away, elude, go back, command my wolf to attack, then attack and rescue wolf if I were able to recover some hps while the wolf tanked. By killing huge mooses, huge grizzly bears, polar bears and elephant seals, I actually skilled at a really decent rate. I wasn't too focused on getting exp cuz I knew that I'd get to level 19 faster than my wolf would get to enormous. And I still got to level 19 faster with my ranger than any other class. So instead of pelting all the time, I figured out what Dubo's potions did (http://ancientanguish.proboards10.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=area&thread=1114739252&page=1). I still earned enough money through pelting (no braiding...braiding is evil!) to buy 2 perm ar and es every time I played which helps out immensely. I raised 2HA during this time using bronze or woodsman's axe. Armour included stone helmet, golden collar (give to wolf when it tanks) and cuirbouilli armour. Container was provision or soft sack. Pipe and parkraz is essential. So are medicinals (bribe Fredd when necessary).
I still kill a lot in the northern tundra...especially since I need time to let the wolf grow after he died for a seventh time. But I spend that time raising 2W so it's as painfully slow as waiting for the wolf to grow.
