All classes can tank well. It just requires the player to know a little about the class.
Personally I only tanked once with my rangers, and it wasn't that bad. Still, so many other races that is more suited for tanking.

My opinion on rangers...
I don't find Rangers very good for tanking in the conventional sense. They have no special defense or healing ability nor high defensive stats that would make them a good tank.
I prefer to solo with Rangers - which is in-line with the typical ranger demeanor anyways. You can alternate tanking between yourself and a wolf. Strike makes killing a bit quicker, and a perm ar and blessed collar on a dread/red wolf makes a wonderful tank. Rangers excel with archery - dark bow or unique silver longbow make quick work of most npcs.
The tactic of shooting a foe, retreating, eluding, and then shooting again, can minimize damage to the ranger.
I always enjoy a party of two rangers, each with a high level star caverns wolf, alternating tanking between the two wolves, healing them at Graddam between major fights, and killing Graddam when he needs reset. Since a ranger with a wolf is relatively high-maintenance (with feeding the wolf) both rangers compliment each other and benefit from killing meat-bearing creatures or stopping at shops that sell meat. It tends to be a fun party of mutual involvement and advancement.
This is by no means the most efficient way to party, obviously, but can be much more fun than the typical tank+bashers style of partying.

after awhile graddam refuses to do his duty, or maybe he just makes you wait for awhile, kind of like misha and her food.

I dunno bout everyone else, but I personally liked ranger tankin. For one, it's different from the norm -- which makes it kinda fun in itself. Not to mention that as a ranger u can make medicine -- if u feel like preping which i never did -- and not to mention, u have block to defend and strike to do extra damage, not to mention a wolf if it fits your fansy. Ok yea, they not the most efficient and I dont even know why I posted but to advise trying it out, its fun

My elf ranger always tanked. And tanked well. Just not 9kers. *twiddle* If I dropped everything and dodged, he did well against big guys, though. Blocking sucked arse.

My dwarf ranger *god rest his soul* could tank about a 200k hour solo with b/a+crescent and just a huge wolf. So I KNOW that if some of you silly rangers would work at it you could get alot more.

Rangers can tank.. anything that can use block defense has tanking potential. I know it's not much, but I know it's possible to (rather easily) take on the biggest fuzzies you can find constantly without a wolf at all. Huge grizzly bears, huge mooses, snow wolves, polar bears, elephant seals.. not 9ks or anything, but can get some decent skills off them and okay exp. And free heals, yey. Only thing is, not sure if I could pull that off with an elf ranger.. or even a helf ranger. Kinda need decent str to gear up enough to tank stuff like that without needing more room to carry heals. Dunno, plenty able with a human/dwarf ranger even without a wolf though, soloing, doin' decent, but not great. Throw in an eno wolf and I'd think it'd be pretty fearsome.
