Basically, the album is a cross between their earlier albums and Lateralus. It has the raw energy from the early stuff with instances of refinement from Lateralus. They also seem to go back and forth between albums with the effects used. Definitely an amazing combo. The first song, "Vicarious", is the perfect example. They also took their various beat timings to another level.
There was a pronounced bass presence for this album after being absent from Lateralus. Guitar was well played throughout, although at times overpowering. Danny once again proves he is one of the best drummers ever. The only thing I dislike about the album is Maynard and his singing. His voice is very soft on some songs; the band overtakes him a few times. He also attempts to sing almost normally on "The Pot", which does not become him. He also distorts his voice completely beyond recognition while -talking quickly- on "Rosetta Stoned." Thankfully, he doesn't hold either of my concerns throughout the songs.
It takes a few listens to really start enjoying it, similar to Lateralus. Overall a good album.

track 5, the pot, is my favorite song on the album, hands down.
overall album is tight, minus tracks 6 and 7, lipan conjuring and lost keys (blame hofmann). i'm sure they're supposed to be cool and everything, but their mystery is lost on me. didn't enjoy em.

Well, Lost Keys doesn't really work for me as a "song" per se, but it works well as an intro for Rosetta Stoned to set the mood.
Vicarious is my favorite. I actually decided that before I learned it was the first single, which is nice, because I rarely have the first single as my favorite song on the album (Parabol/Parabola was my favorite from Lateralus, not Schism).

I have no idea what my favourite song is. It continuously changes the more I listen to a Tool album; the more I listen, the more detail I pick out about the individual songs. I originally loved Vicarious vastly more than the others. It definitely has the best riff on it (opening intro), but I'm not sure about the overall song. It's the only one which initially appealed to me, and the only one I could actually understand the topic of without written lyrics. Maynard likes to make fans listen to the overall musical picture before he releases the lyrics.

That's what he tells YOU. I'm sure he has a weekday set aside for each of his boyfriends. Monday's probably just your special day he set aside for you. I believe Calvin gets all of his free time and his weekends exclusively.
